Prostatic Hyperplasia: Sleepless Nights

Question from Anonymous:
My husband,(and I say this heavy-heartedly and handily) has been a prostate sufferer for the last dozen years. And I have to admit that the situation, as sad as it is for him, has had a profound effect on the entire family. The fact is that Sidney’s prostate has been hanging over my head for a decade. What should I do?

Answer from Dr. Pinhas:
Your poor Sydney. Benign prostatic hyperplasia which is an overgrowth of normal prostate tissue, very commonly found in men over the age of 60, is no laughing matter. From the style and tone of your question, I presume “your” Sydney is way over 60!! This abundance of tissue squeezes the urethra making urination difficult and more frequent. It is apparent that his problem has become your problem. That his frequent urination is becoming a family issue probably has to do with the fact that both of you are getting “testy” from lack of sleep. He is probably waking you up all night long with his forays to the bathroom. What is a person to do? Whole-heartedly, and “handily” take him to the urologist and the health food store. As for yourself, the focus of your question, seek a sleep aid or sleep in a separate bedroom. The translation from Yiddish to English is always amusing!
