hi, Dr. Pinhas
this is harry, from human sexuality class
we were having the conversation about masturbation among my friends, and one of my friends said, as you masturbate more, you are more likely to have unhealthy children. i responded to him that according my human sexuality class discussion, masturbation doesn’t have any side effects, and its also good for your health. i would like you to respond to this question, Please?
Response from Dr. Pinhas
Phew! Harry your friends are living in a by-gone era under the influence of the anti-masturbatory historical legacy. They sound like they have been influenced by the likes of Dr. John Harvey Kellog and Reverend Graham who developed the corn flake and the graham cracker, respectively, as anti-masturbation foods to prevent children from practicing the “secret sin, self-pollution, and sexual abuse” ( all synonoms for masturbation during the 1800’s). During these times, masturbation was thought to cause ” premature and defective development, an unnatural gait, a failure in mental capacity, shyness, isolation, idiocy, insanity, blindness, a fondness for irritating substances, loss of energy and spirit”….. the list of illusionary illnesses goes on ad nauseam. But I would like to mention that “self-pollution” was thought to be especially hideous in women (since they were never to be considered sexual, viable independent beings, anyway, but rather were considered chattel). In women, it was believed that masturbation would cause under or over developed breasts, sterility, painful menses, difficult childbirth or sterility. To boot, ” female masturbators would become raving nymphomaniacs and die in a fit of sexual over excitment.”
Hilarious isn’t it? This sounds like a Saturday Night Live script…But I am sad to say that this was the science of the late 19th century into the early 20th century. The Boy Scout manual of the 1950’s still referred to masturbation as “self-pollution”. In all the anti-masturbation bashing of early era’s, I have never heard that autoerotic behavior causes birth defects. This is a new one to me. There is no truth in any of this –sheer mythology brought to us by the fusion of dogmatic religiosity, mascarading as pseudoscience, handed down through the decades as an attempt to control sexual impulses in both men and women. Why must we pervert religion into a form of social/sexual control when it has the power to provide boundaries, respect, comfort and healing? Why can’t religion be used to help children develop a healthy, boundary-mindful guilt/shame free sexuality? I guess I am asking too much of the world’s dominant religious institutions. But alas, I am once again going too far a field… Let me get back to your question. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT MASTURBATION CAUSES ANY HEALTH HAZARDS OR CREATES BIRTH DEFECTS!! As a matter of fact, women who have spasmodic dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual cramps) may benefit by masturbating to orgasm, which temporarily provides relief from uterine spasms. Furthermore, men who clean out their prostate glands (by whatever sexual means, masturbation being the easiest, non-negotiable rapid way, may have less tendency torwards prostatitis because seminal secretions are “fresher” and have less bacteria build up.
It is so sad that this negative historical legacy about self-pleasuring behavior has the power to warp and threaten individuals into a rigid moral compliance. Tell your friend that an orgasm is an orgasm. How can the body possibly know which ones are the “self-polluting ” ( my sarcasm) self-induced ones from the socially sanctioned two-person ones? LOL

Yes i do agree with Dr. Pinhas that your friend is living under the theories developed by Dr. Kellog. I am pretty sure that it is the exact opposite. Because masturbating is believed to relax the prostate and actually reduce the risk of prostate cancer. If my information is incorrect please someone let me know.
Some of my friends have said the same thing about masturbation and i didnt know what to believe but after taking human sexuality i now know that there are no health hazards regarding masturbation and can actually be good for you.
I not absolutely understand, what you mean?
Hi, blogger, What the blog is about is old myths about masturbation causing health consequences, which is simply not true. The cornflake, specifically Kellog’s cornflakes, an American cereal, was thought to be a preventive food to help children withstand the impulse to practice “the secret sin” which is what masturbation was called in the late 19th century-early 20th century in America. Does this clarify the blog question and comments for you? My blog titles are a little tongue and cheek…. another American idiom. LOL
hello, spring is coming! good post there, tnx for longislandsextherapy.com
And you do not know, how it is possible to find the author and to talk to it concerning this information. Someone can knows it ICQ?
I am the organizer of the information, based upon research, so I suppose you can talk to me? What are your thoughts?
In class we talked about masturbation and we finished the class off with the topic of circle cumming. the term didn’t sound to unfamiliar to me cause this is how I discovered masturbation for myself. Funny story, my friends discovered their dads pornography on his ancient computer that was about as fast as a calculator. Later that week we have a sleep over and its not surprising to me that the kids house, the one with the dads porn collection refused to watch any of it. We all had this contest to see who could finish first in our sleeping bags. and the main discussion was how my friends needed two hands to do this lol. But yeah I’ve never done it before so I was unsure of myself. later on that month after alot of discussion about how many times a day you can do it etc. Even saying he did it 8 times a day. I figured it out for myself about 2 weeks after this sleep over and I was able to discuss this amongst my friends but I didn’t tell them I didn;t know how to do it at first I lied saying I was doing it for a while. I just thought it was very interesting how you brought this up in class and how close it was to my self experience. I was about 13 when this happened. despite the fact this class is early in the morning I love waking up to hear about our discussion and your stories the class is lots of fun.
I did wanna finish this with a question so.. Does masturbation cause you to be less horny? does it interfere with your sex drive if you do it daily?
Guys experience with masturbation is always fascinating. Gender role expectations encourage guys to feel aroused sexually and interested in exploring sex in an often times driven way. Our culture promotes the idea that boys are prisoners of sex and girls are prisoners of love to paraphrase the sexual sociologist, John Gagnon.
But onto your question… masturbation doesn’t make a person less aroused sexually but may make a person less likely to orgasm quickly if they just finished masturbating to orgasm. In some ways it can remedy rapid ejaculation in males, if they are anxious that they might come too quickly with a partner. NO masturbation does not interfere with your sex drive if you do it daily. Sex drive is independent of behavior in young healthy males. Enjoy yourself! ( as long as you know that you are not becoming sexually compulsive)
My opinion is a bit another how it is possible to talk to the author, for example on an e-mail?
It’s ridiculous that people are still taught things like this. Hopefully your friend believes you. Before taking health and human sexuality courses, I was always told that a male can run out of semen, “so you better save up if you want a child”. I remember in class how we discussed the “dangers” of masturbation, like your dick falling off and other outrageous effects.
Masturbation is perfectly fine and safe for both sexes. Society should not try to stop you from having sexual pleasure with yourself. The only thing is that you should do it in the right place and at the right time, not in public obviously.
Dr. Pinhas i have another question regarding this. although i never tried it i have heard if you masturbate a bit before having sex you can have sex for a very long time. Is there any truth to that?
R, Think about it…. if you had sexual intercourse with your woman and orgasmed…. wouldn’t it take you longer to come the second time or third time ( God bless you, LOL), if you were having sex sequentially? Masturbation to orgasm would serve the same purpose. It would take you through the human sexual response cycle once and it would slow down the sexual response cycle if you were having orgasms within a few hours of each other. Your refractory stage ( the amount of time in between orgasms) would be longer. Sooooo the short answer is as a general rule, masturbation will help you delay orgasm if you come within a reasonable amount of time before having sexual intercourse.
